2007: Split & Dubrovnik, Croatia

Impressions
Easily the most surprising part of my trip. I had always been curious about the former Yugoslavia, and got a chance this time around to visit Croatia with a friend from the neighboring region -- who did an excellent job showing me around. I confined my visit to the cities of Split and Dubrovnik along the Dalmatian coast by the Adriatic Sea. Croatia is definitely beautiful with intriguing relics, inviting beaches, charmingly hilly terrain and a character unlike any other place I've ever seen. Though I did see a lot of tourists (especially in Dubrovnik), it is still somewhat undiscovered by many as evidenced by the question I'm most frequently asked about my trip -- 'How was Croatia?'.

I'm fortunate for having visited this place with a local, which made it much easier to communicate with other locals. Most of our time was spent exploring the towns on foot, eating the local food and visiting the beaches (swimming in the Adriatic) to cool off from the radically hot temperatures. But aside from all this, what struck me about this trip was something more personal. You see, before this trip, my thoughts about this part of the world were often accompanied by reminders of the events of the early 1990s when, as a kid in India, I would tune in to those stories on TV and somehow feel that this part of the world was so ... distant. Setting foot there has underscored that the world is indeed small, and the only distance between me and any place in this world is a flight or two.
