Impressions
Easily the best city I visited on this trip. I had passed through Schipol a bunch of times, but never stepped out into the city. Glad I did so this time, and spent three nights in this tremendous city. Yes, this city has enjoyed much attention in the media, from good old-fashioned word of mouth and from that Quentin Tarantino movie that all rightfully celebrate its open culture, its obvious beauty, its accessibility, etc. However, what struck me about this city was something completely different.

What struck me, was this city's modesty. This city has got it all -- compelling architecture, provoking museums, unmistakable openness, delicious food, competent DJs, the romantic confluence of canals, boats, bicycles and cobblestones -- but nevertheless, has its head squarely on its shoulders. I have visited many cities that sport gargantuan egos at the first sniff of fame, but not Amsterdam. The people are refreshingly friendly, the city is not prohibitively expensive and the streets were relatively safe for me to saunter back to my room at 5am. Love this city!
