2005: Geneva & Zurich, Switzerland

Impressions
Switzerland was my introduction to Europe outside of London. I decided to take a few weeks off in Summer 2005 before joining b-school to visit Europe and chose Geneva as my starting point. I would later make my way to France and Spain on the same trip. In Geneva, I stayed with a friend who graciously hosted me, and drove me on the very first day to Montreux, where we met some of her friends and hung out at the annual Jazz fest. The following day, we drove from Geneva to Zurich, passing through Bern and a number of other cities. I was excited to visit Zurich if only because the city surfaces in so many espionage plots (Bourne Identity is one example). Perhaps I went in expecting too much, but Zurich was fun regardless -- we went to clubs, ate the real Swiss fondue (with Gruyere cheese) and chocolate, walked around a ton.

As I reflected on my trip during the train ride to Paris a few days later, there were two things that struck me about Switzerland -- (1) that it is centrally located, making it easy to access a number of destinations and (2) that it is strangely similar to India given the diversity: Switzerland's cantons are akin to Indian states, and they speak four different languages somewhat akin to the lingual variety in India. Glad I used this as my starting and ending point. Next time, I look forward to hiking in the Alps.
