2005: Montpellier, Avignon & Marseille, France
Impressions
We hit several cities in southern France on our way back from Barcelona to Geneva, starting with a brief stop at Montpellier, a city that had
come recommended from a French friend of mine in Seattle. He specifically advised against excessively touristy places like Nice and suggested
other cities in southern France instead. Indeed, the feeling in these cities was markedly different from that of visiting Paris. We didn't have
much time in Montpellier, but walked around the narrow streets and sat down for a pint at Place du la Comedia. The same day, we hopped on a train
to Avignon (in the Provence region), where we would stay for the night close to the train station. Our visit to Avignon coincided with the
entertaining annual street fest. The city was more touristy than I expected, but with a lot of character and relaxing nonetheless. The next day,
we made the quick hop to Marseilles, what seemed like a slightly bigger city, and wandered around the waterfront that was studded with fishermen
selling their fresh catch. I couldn't pass up the chance to try a bouillabaisse with the freshest ingredients -- and the big bowl of seafood
goodness delivered. Following this short stop, we hopped back on the train, heading eventually to Geneva. This train ride was definitely the best
compared to other rides on this trip -- hilly terrain, windy tracks, lush green grass staring at you along every turn. Several hours
later, we were in Geneva. The next day, I flew back to Seattle.
