Impressions
I was excited about this trip for several reasons -- (1) This was my first trip to London and I was prepared with the 'Eyewitness Top 10 Guide to London', a travel guide I liked so much that I promptly went back to Amazon.com and posted a review after my trip; (2) This was also my first trip to Europe (discounting the occasional layovers between transcontinental flights) -- so it marked a turning point for my travels that had, until then, been largely studded with Indian and American destinations; and (3) I was visiting/staying with a high-school friend whom I hadn't seen for a very long time.

London delivered. I loved walking around this city, taking the tube, exploring the different neighborhoods. Loved talking to locals. I visited the legendary Lord's cricket stadium that had hosted so many of the cricket matches I had watched as a kid. I saw a ton of sights. Loved watching the England vs Australia rugby game with locals -- and the madness that ensued upon England's victory. I downed several pints of London Pride with spicy Thai curry for brunch at a local pub in Notting Hill. And strangely enough, I met more than one person with my first name, making it hard for me to argue that my first name really ain't that common in India. After a week in the city, I left with the feeling that London is half-way between India & the US in more ways than one -- geographically, culturally, architecturally, gastromonically, take your pick.
