What is comfort food? I just got back from spending a month in Europe passing through several cities across different countries. One of my favorite things to do on trips is to try the local food everywhere – brats in Germany, crepes in France, paella & tapas in Spain, etc. At the tail end of my trip in the Loire Valley in France, during a dinner with friends, the conversation briefly steered toward comfort food. Our host commented that the spread on our table took him back several years – because it reminded him of what he ate when we has a kid. His comment rang true, because even as I enjoyed the delicious variety of foods during my month in Europe, I felt an equal hankering to cook up some good old-fashioned chicken curry upon my return. And that’s what comfort food is all about – something familiar and inviting – and by definition, different for everybody. To find yours, just ask yourself what food you would miss most if you were away for a month. Surprised? |
